# Hashing Malware Samples

As the name suggests, the first thing we need is to get the hash of the sample, what hash types do we need for this? `sha256` , `md5` , and any other hash is required by you to get:

## Windows

```powershell
# For SHA256
Get-FileHash -Algorithm sha256 <file name>

# For MD5
Get-FileHash -Algorithm md5 <file name>
```

## Linux/Unix

```bash
# For SHA256
sha256sum <file name>

# For MD5
md5sum <file name>
```
